Ignite Series by Nora Phoenix – A Review

Ignite: The Complete Series is described by the author as, ‘a slow burn dystopian MMM gay romance series’.

Ignite: The Complete Series by Nora Phoenix is on Amazon

I LOVE Nora Phoenix’s books from Ballsy Boys with KM Neuhold (another great author), to her No Shame Series. But with this set, I don’t know how to put it, other than; the world building is beyond those of any author I’ve read. In any genre.

These books are action-packed! It grabbed me from the first scene and just dragged me along. It was like a gay Rock action flick. Just when I caught my breath, Nora would twist the screws and raise the pressure again. I couldn’t put the books down because I just had to see what would happen next. I binged all four books in two days (would’ve been less, but life got in the way).

Let me say, Nora herself has stated her confusion as to why her fans weren’t reading these books. I’ll admit that I was one of those resistant readers, because the term “slow burn” didn’t appeal to me. I don’t know why I waited or resisted this series, but here’s my self-interrogation and discovery.

Clearly, I misunderstood her premise of slow burn, because even though it’s not sexual from moment one, it does have great intimacy and does lead up to hot sex. But the storyline is more realistic in how these men would come together. I mean, if I’m on the run and looking over my shoulder for various enemies, I’m not putting orgasms over survival. It only makes sense how she progressed their relationship.

Also, the picture on the covers, while gorgeous, made me feel the books wouldn’t be of interest to me. It appeared more apocalyptic; more there’s-lava-everywhere-we-have-to-avoid. While these characters are trying to survive during an alien invasion, they aren’t dodging fireballs and walls of flame.

I guess I resisted buying the books because I’m more into romance, and less into fighting to survive. Truthfully, the No Shame Series is pretty intense too, but I didn’t think this story would have the romance I was used to by her. BUT I was so wrong!

Even though this is a “dystopian” world with America breaking apart into three countries, camps to “reform” gays, and alien invasions, she makes it believable. Somehow, she makes the unrest of our current reality go further into the future where this could actually be the outcome. It’s not so ‘sci-fi-ish’ that it seems, well, sci-fi. Everything gave the impression this future is plausible.

The three main characters; Tan, Austin and Mack are very different people. Nora does a great job in bringing out their individuality. They each have a distinct voice and it’s easy to tell whose perspective you’re reading. They’ve each had unique experiences, thought processes and actions. She’s very consistent in keeping their personalities throughout the series. Sometimes, as books go on and characters fall in love, the author has a tendency to blend the couple (or throuple or quadruple) into similar characteristics. Not with these three (or the supporting cast).

In the first book, Ignite , we meet Austin, Tan and Mack. The aliens come to Earth in a not so friendly way and our guys are trying to escape their prison and look for a way to live in a very different from world. Here’s the book’s description from the Amazon site:

In a world that’s burning, where it’s every man for himself, all they can do to survive is hold on to each other…

A slow burn MMM romance set in a dystopian world. The first book in an exciting trilogy!

The world has changed. Tan has survived three years in a reintegration camp he was sent to for being gay, but he’s at the limit of what he can endure, even with the help of his best friend, Austin.

When a massive meteor shower creates chaos at the camp, Austin and Tan take the chance to escape. They’re joined by Mack, a newbie at camp who is an expert in survival but knows nothing about love…or anything else.

But when they discover human-like aliens have landed on Earth with war on their agenda, their escape becomes a hell of a lot more dangerous. They grow close, but without power and food and no safe place to stay, how will they survive? Where can they find freedom…and love?

While the world around them burns, all they have are each other.

Ignite is the first book in the suspenseful Ignite trilogy, a slow burn dystopian MMM romance set in an alternative world. The first book ends in a cliffhanger, but the series will end with a HEA.

Ignite, Book One

In Smolder, we get to know the men better and watch as they grow and learn about their new world. Several side characters are introduced. Some I like, some I’m ambivalent about and others I want to gut like a pumpkin for Halloween. Read the description below from the Amazon site:

In a world where it’s every man for himself, all they can do is hold on to each other…

A slow burn MMM survival romance. The second book in an exciting trilogy!

Austin, Mack, and Tan have found a safe spot at the deserted farm. They have food and shelter, but what will the cost be of defending their little slice of heaven?

Unexpected visitors keep showing up, and it becomes harder and harder to tell friends from enemies…and the line between right and wrong becomes more and more blurred.

They grow closer and closer, finding comfort with each other, but when disaster strikes and threatens what has blossomed between them, will they find a way through this?

While the world around them burns, all they have are each other.

Smolder is the second book in the suspenseful Ignite series, a slow burn MMM romance set in an alternative world. The romance heats up in this second book, and the men will find their happy ever after in book three.

Smolder, Book Two is available on Amazon

Burn wraps up the series in a very satisfying way. Old friends are paramount in helping our trio survive and we revisit some people and places that make me want to throw things. Here’s what this book is about from the Amazon site:

In a world where it’s every man for himself, all they can do is hold on to each other…

An MMM survival romance. The last book in an exciting trilogy!

With soldiers next door, the situation has become dire for Austin, Mack, and Tan. Every time they find a solution for one challenge, another arises, ranging from family members who show up unexpectedly to reunions with people they’d never hoped to see again.

But they may have bigger problems when the earthquakes continue and concern increases about the earth crust’s stability. The only way to prevent an even worse disaster is to stop the aliens from drilling for more oil, but how?

They cling to each other as the future looks more and more bleak. Is there any hope left for a happy ever after for them?

Burn is the last book in the suspenseful Ignite trilogy, a slow burn MMM romance set in an alternative world. This series will end with a deeply satisfying HEA.

Burn, Book Three is available on Amazon

In the box set there are bonus chapters that help wrap up the series and gives an insight as to how our main characters are getting on. Plus, we’re given the set up for the bonus novella, Pax.

Here is the blurb of the Ignite trilogy from the Amazon page.

In a world that’s burning, where it’s every man for himself, all they can do to survive is hold on to each other…

“A wild ride through alien attacks, breaking from prison, encounters of the third kind and sweet, hot and sensitive development of love and trust.” (Amazon reviewer)

The Ignite Trilogy is a slow burn MMM romance set in a dystopian world and offers a thrilling combination of action, romance, and suspense. Now for the first time in one box set: all three books plus exclusive, never before released bonus chapters and a bonus novella called Pax.

In closing, learn from my short-sightedness and give this series a chance. It’s filled with action, adventure, romance, sex, interesting characters, aliens and a great story. Also, check out Nora Phoenix on her Amazon Author page to check out her other gay romance novels. You won’t be disappointed!
