This is my first book by Gina Ardito and I was not disappointed. The Afterlife Universe is an amazing take on what happens to us after we die, along with ghosts, karma, past lives and so much more.
Luc is a tortured soul, and he feels that every woman he’s known in all his past lives has done nothing more than betray him. He’s closed off, sarcastic and angry. He uses his ability to put up these walls to be the best soul bounty hunter in the Afterlife. He’s not prepared, or happy when he’s pulled into a new program where he’s given a trainee.
Jodie is a woman who’s been hurt in every past life but she still hangs on to the empathy and sweet nature that allows her to connect with others. After being scarred in a horrible accident that kills her family, she learns to hide her pain and her scars. When life gets too hard, she takes her own life and ends up in the Afterlife, confused and afraid. She’s also paired with a hard-nosed Luc who is supposed to train her on how to bring in lost souls (ghosts) from Earth back to the Afterlife to be reborn.
Along the way we watch the two characters learn how to interact with one another. From angry and unsure, to admiring her skill, Luc must learn to trust Jodie. And Jodie, so scarred from her life, both figuratively and literally, must learn to stop hiding behind her pain and embrace her strengths.
This book was very well written and the story is captivating. I really enjoyed the way Ms. Ardito reimagined life after death and how we move on from one world to the next. The characters are well rounded and grow as the story continues. I like how she makes them appear so opposite, yet so compatible. I will make sure to keep up with this series, and I hope you give it a read as well!
Here’s the blurb from the book:

If they weren’t already dead, working together would probably kill them.
After one too many disappointments, Jodie Devlin took her own life. Until a new future can be created for her, she serves as one of Death’s bounty hunters, retrieving souls who haunt Earth. She’ll need smarts, charm, and trickery to convince these specters to give up the ghost and move on. These same skills come in handy for dealing with her bull-headed, know-it-all trainer.
Luc Asante’s wife ordered him taken off life support, condemning him to employment in the Afterlife. Now he’s saddled with a trainee who’s as soft-hearted as he is hard, as impulsive as he is methodical. In a place where perfection is the norm, she flaunts her flaws just to drive him nuts.
When the two confront the secrets of their past, only the ultimate sacrifice can save them both.
I give this book a total thumbs up! 5/5 stars for the brilliant new take on life/love after death, and the wonderful writing.
